Hubsan X4 H107D Plus

Hubsan is one of the top selling brands of drones in the world, and the Hubsan X4 H107D+ (or H107C Plus) is their newest flagship model.

At the 2015 CES show, Hubsan announced a completely redesigned and upgraded line of the X4 series drones. This new line of drones are the X4 Plus line.

The Hubsan X4 H107D Plus Review

The first thing you’ll notice is that the body has been completely redesigned on the H107D+ from the rounder “eggshell” shape from the old H107D. Hubsan reportedly made the change to accommodate better aerodynamics and a more aggressive styling. While much of the electronics are the same as the previous version, some smaller tweaks have gone into the drone.

Hubsan X4 H107D+ Review: FPV Drone Camera

The Hubsan X4 H107D+ is first and foremost, and FPV Drone. FPV, or first person view, allows the pilot to see a live video feed from the Hubsan H107D+ as if they were sitting in the cockpit. The camera itself is the same 720P/30FPS camera found on the old H107D. It can record video in 1280×720, perfect for Youtube or recreational videos. While the camera isn’t GoPro quality, and shouldn’t be used for either drone racing or making movies, it’s enough to record flights and share among friends and family. The camera can also take still images. You can record both images and video to a MicroSD card located in the controller.

Hubsan X4 H107D+ Review: New 6 Axis Gyro

One of the best things about the older hubsan models were that they were very nimble, but at the same time, very easy to fly. The new 6 Axis Gyro has smoothed out flight even more so even the jerkiest of moves are a bit smoother. This makes the drone even more predictable and easy to fly.

Hubsan X4 H107D+ Review: Upgraded & Reinforced Rotor Arms

On the older Hubsan the rotor arms were designed to break away from the craft on impact in hopes of saving the body. While this feature still remains, the rotor blade arms have been reinforced to reduce vibration, increase in flight rigidity and dampen the vibrations. The rotor arms do flex a bit so that at the moment of crash impact, hopefully the body will not shatter or break.

The drone has rubber feet at the bottom of each rotor post that gives the drone a softer landing and doesn’t scratch indoor surfaces (that could earn you a one way ticket to bed for the night).

There are four built in LED lights on the body of the quadcopter. These lights help you determine which direction the drone is facing if you’re flying in dusk or at night time.

Hubsan X4 H107D+ Review: The Drone Body

If you flip the H107D+ over, you will see that the belly of the drone has holes that help to reduce weight and lessen the heat generated inside the body while the drone is in use. The drone’s antenna can be found running the length of the body. This isn’t actually optimal for range, but it does work.

Some people have modified the body to have a small R/C car antenna tube protrude from the top of the drone with the antenna inside it. Just by doing this one mod, people have reported getting another 30-50 meters of range easily (some have reported up to 75 additional meters of range). The antenna does put a little bit of drag on the drone, but not really enough to notice.

The Hubsan logo on the top of the drone can be smeared off easily. If you want to keep the logo, grab a can of clear acrylic spray paint and run a protective coat of paint over the logo so it doesn’t brush off in your backpack or in flight.

Hubsan X4 H107D+ Review: Altitude Limiter

New for this plus model, there is an altitude limiter that sets the altitude that the drone will fly at. This is perfect for video recording and when you just want a smooth flight and better stabilization.

Hubsan X4 H107D+ Review: Battery and Charger

The Lithium Polymer (LiPo) battery is a 3.7V 530mAh that gives you about 5-6 minutes of FPV flying and 7-10 minutes with the camera turned off.

Charging the battery take about 60 minutes from the USB charger. It’s worth mentioning that the USB charger is capable of using the newer 2.1A phone and tablet chargers, however, the battery will get hotter during charge and need a bit of time to cool down. I am not sure whether this truly affects battery life and the number of times that the battery can be charged, however, I’d only use the 2.1A very rarely.

Because the charger is a USB Charger, you can use a wall plug, car adaptor, laptop or even a portable battery pack for mobile phones to charge the Hubsan battery.

Since it takes about an hour to charge the battery, we definitely suggest getting an extra set of batteries or two to extend your runtimes. It’s no fun when you can only go out and play for five minutes, right? Having a extra set of batteries (they come in three and five packs with multi chargers to charge all at once) you can extend your run time to 15-60 minutes depending on the number of batteries you have.

Hubsan X4 H107D+ Review: The Controller

It appears that the remote control was, for the most part, held over from the previous version of the H107D. It still has the 4.3″ LCD display and the remote is a 2.4GHz 4 channel transmitter. All the drone video recording is done right from the controller via microSD card (16GB Max).

The controller itself is pretty easy to configure and use. Both beginners and well acquainted drone pilots won’t have any problems figuring out the controls, and in fact, many people have said that the controller was easier to use than the Syma X5C’s.

The 2.4GHz remote also runs 5.8GHz for video. There is anti interference technology built in, so other drones may be flown in the same area as the Hubsan X4 H107D+.

Hubsan X4 H107D+ Review: Conclusion

Just like it’s predecessor, the Hubsan X4 H107D plus offers a ton of value for what you pay. While it’s still by all means, a toy drone, the H107D+ begins to cross over into the hobby segment with all the modifications that people have figured out. Longer flight times, more range and even strapping a GoPro to the drone all add up to one of the best FPV Drones that you can get for under $200.
